Why Is My House Key Hard to Turn?

Why is your house key hard to turn in the lock? Six common causes, what you can try first, and when it's time to call us. Call (443) 527-1442.

Six common causes, and what to try first

A key that sticks, grinds or only turns if you jiggle it is easy to ignore until the day it won't turn at all. That day usually comes at the worst time. The good news is that most sticky locks have a simple cause, and many are easy to fix.

Here are six common reasons a house key gets hard to turn, and what you can do about each one.

           1. The key is a worn copy

Keys wear down over time. A copy made from a copy wears even faster, because small mistakes add up each time.

           Try this:

use your original key, or the newest key you have. If the original turns smoothly and the copy doesn't, the copy is the problem. Make a fresh copy from the original, not from the worn one.

           2. The lock is dirty or dry

Dust, grit and old grease build up inside the lock. Over time the small parts inside don't move as freely.

           Try this:

use a lubricant made for locks, such as dry graphite or a lock spray. Put a little in the keyhole, then put the key in and turn it back and forth a few times. Skip cooking oil and thick grease. They attract dirt and can make it worse.

           3. The door and frame don't line up

Sometimes the lock is fine, but the door has shifted. When that happens, the bolt rubs against the strike plate on the frame, and it feels like the key is the problem.

           Try this:

open the door and turn the key. If it turns easily with the door open but sticks when the door is shut, the door is out of line. Pushing or pulling on the door while you turn the key often helps for now. The fix is adjusting the strike plate or the door so the bolt slides in freely.

           4. Cold weather

In winter, moisture inside the lock can freeze. The key goes in but won't turn, or won't go in at all.

           Try this:

warm the key with your hand or a hair dryer and try again. A de-icer made for locks also works. Don't pour hot water into the lock. It can freeze again and make things worse.

           5. Worn parts inside the lock

Locks have small pins and springs inside. After years of use, they wear down or get damaged. A key that used to turn smoothly starts to catch or grind.

           Try this:

if a fresh key and lubricant don't help, the lock may be worn out. At that point, rekeying or replacing the lock is the real fix.

           6. A bent or damaged key

A key that has been bent, even a little, can catch inside the lock. Look down the length of the key. If it isn't straight, stop using it.

           Try this:

switch to another key. Never bend a key back and keep using it. A bent key is much more likely to snap off inside the lock.

           What not to do

            Don't force it.

Turning harder is the most common way a key breaks off in the lock.

Don't use pliers on the key.

Extra force can damage the lock and the key.

            Don't wait too long.

A lock that's hard to turn today may not turn at all next week.

Jeep Key Fob Dead? How to Get In and Get Going

Jeep key fob dead and the doors won't unlock? Here's how to find the hidden key, get in, start the Jeep and change the battery. Call (443) 527-1442.

Find the hidden key, get in and start your Jeep

You walk up to your Jeep, press unlock, and nothing happens. No flash, no beep. Most of the time the problem is simple: the battery inside the key fob is worn out. The good news is that most Jeep keys have a backup built in, so you can usually get in and get going without a new key.

Here's what to try, in order.

           1. Make sure it's the fob, not the Jeep

Before you blame the fob, look at the Jeep itself.

Do the dome light or dash lights come on when you open a door with the key? If nothing lights up at all, the car battery may be the problem, not the fob.

If you have a second fob at home, try it. If the spare works, the first fob's battery is the likely cause.

Stand close to the driver door and try again. A weak fob battery often still works from a foot or two away.

           2. Find the hidden key

Most Jeep fobs carry a metal emergency key.

            Flip keys:

press the button on the side and the metal blade swings out. That blade works in the door lock.

            Fobik and smart fobs:

look for a small release button or slide on the back or side. Push it and pull out the metal key.

If you can't find a release, check the owner's manual for your model and year. Every fob is a little different.

           3. Find the keyhole

Older Jeeps have a keyhole you can see on the driver door. On many newer models, the keyhole is hidden under a small plastic cap at the end of the door handle. There is usually a little slot on the underside of the cap. Slide the metal key into the slot and gently lift the cap off. Take your time so you don't scratch the paint.

Turn the key in the lock and the door should open. The alarm may go off when you open the door. That's normal. It should stop once the Jeep starts or when you lock and unlock it with the key.

           4. Start the Jeep

How you start the Jeep depends on what kind of key you have.

            Flip key or regular key:

put it in the ignition and turn it like always. The chip in the key talks to the Jeep even if the fob battery is dead, so it should start.

            Fobik:

push the Fobik into the slot in the dash and turn it. The chip still works without a good battery.

Smart key with a start button:

many models have a backup way to start with a weak fob. On a lot of them, you hold the fob right up against the start button and press the button with the fob. Your owner's manual will show the exact spot for your model.

If the Jeep still won't start, the problem may not be the battery. The fob itself may be damaged or no longer paired to the Jeep.

           5. Change the fob battery

Once you're home, replace the battery so it doesn't happen again.

Open the fob carefully. Most have a small notch where you can use a coin or a small flat screwdriver.

Look at the old battery. The size is printed right on it. Most fobs use a flat, coin-shaped battery.

Put the new battery in the same way, with the same side facing up.

Snap the fob back together and test the lock and unlock buttons.

Most of the time the fob works right away with a new battery. If the buttons still do nothing, it may need pairing with the Jeep again.
