Keypad or Smart Lock?

A keypad deadbolt opens with a code you type in. A smart lock can also work from a phone app. Most of both kinds still have a key cylinder for backup. Both kinds run on batteries; the FAQ below covers what happens when they die.

Only one spare key and three people who need in today? A keypad gives each of them a code.

When a Keypad Makes Sense

  • You're tired of hiding a key under the mat.
  • You want to change who can get in without changing the lock.
  • The keypad you have now is dead or won't take codes.

Service Area

Keypad and smart locks put in across Baltimore City and Baltimore, Howard, Harford, Anne Arundel and Carroll counties.

Office Keypad Locks

For an office or staff door, a keypad lets employees in by code while the manager keeps the override key. We install keypad locks on business doors as well as homes.

Old Deadbolt Out, Keypad In

Most keypad deadbolts fit the holes a standard deadbolt already uses, so the swap is usually clean. If an older door was drilled to an odd size, we adjust it.

Before We Get There

  • Tell us which door the lock is for.
  • Tell us if it's for a home or a business.
  • Let us know if you want the backup key to match your other locks.

Good to Know

  1. Is a keypad lock as strong as a regular deadbolt? A keypad deadbolt has a bolt like any deadbolt. The strike plate and the door frame matter just as much.
  2. Can I change the code myself? On most keypad locks, yes. We'll show you how once it's installed.
  3. Does a smart lock need Wi-Fi? Not always. Some connect to your phone by Bluetooth, and some need a hub or Wi-Fi to work from far away.
  4. What happens when the keypad batteries die? Most models flash or beep for a while when the batteries get low. If they do run out, the backup key still opens the door, and on some models a 9-volt battery held to two contacts on the outside wakes the keypad up long enough to enter your code.
  5. Can the backup key match my other house keys? Often, yes. Many keypad deadbolts have a regular key cylinder that we can rekey to the key you already carry.
