Picking the Right Deadbolt

Single or double cylinder? The FAQ below explains the difference. In many cases, we can key the new deadbolt to match your other locks, and we set the strike plate with long screws so the bolt holds.

Good to Know

  1. Single or double cylinder: which deadbolt should I get? Most homes use a single cylinder with a thumb turn inside, so you can get out fast. A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, so it isn't the right pick for every door. We'll go over the options for your door.
  2. Can you put a deadbolt on a door that never had one? We can. We drill the door and the frame for the new deadbolt.
  3. Will a new deadbolt fit the holes from my old one? Most deadbolts use standard hole sizes, so a new one often fits. If it doesn't, we adjust the door.
  4. Why does my deadbolt only lock when I pull on the door? The bolt is catching the strike plate because the door has sagged or shifted. Moving or reshaping the strike usually fixes it. Don't force the key, since it can snap off in the lock.
  5. Can I put a deadbolt on my apartment door? Often, but check the lease first. Many landlords want to approve the lock and keep a key.
