Getting the Piece Out

We use thin extraction tools to grip the broken piece and slide it out of the lock. In most cases, the lock still works afterward. Then we make you a fresh key, and if the lock is worn, we can rekey or replace it.

A key snapped in a storefront or office door can keep you from opening up or closing for the night. We remove the piece and cut a working key.

Car Key Snapped at the Head

When a car key breaks at the plastic head, the chip often survives. On many cars we pull the blade from the lock, cut a new key and move or program the chip so the car still starts.

  • Don't push the broken piece in with the rest of the key or another tool.
  • Keep the half of the key you still have. It helps us cut a new one.
  • Tell us which lock it is: front door, back door, car door or ignition.

Good to Know

  1. Can I pull out a broken key with tweezers? Sometimes, if the piece sticks out. If it's flush with the lock, tweezers can push it deeper.
  2. Can a key break off in a car door lock too? It can. Car door, trunk and ignition locks can all trap a broken key, and we remove those too.
  3. Should I keep using the lock once the piece is out? If the key turned hard before it broke, have us check the lock. A stiff lock strains the next key too.
  4. Why did my key break? Keys usually give out after years of bending back and forth, or when one is twisted hard or used to pry. A cracked or bent key is a sign to replace it before it snaps.
  5. Can glue or a magnet get the piece out? We'd skip both. Glue can seal the piece in for good, and a magnet won't grip the brass most house keys are made from.
