What We Fix
Over time, the key and the small parts inside the ignition lock wear down. When that happens, the key may stick or stop turning. We fix the ignition lock or replace it. If a worn key is the problem, a new key can be enough.

Signs of Ignition Trouble
- The key turns only after you jiggle it.
- The key won't come out when the car is off.
- The key goes in but won't turn at all.
Service Area
Ignition work in Baltimore City, plus Baltimore, Howard, Harford, Anne Arundel and Carroll counties.
Key Turns, Engine Doesn't
Key turns fully, dash lights come on, yet the engine won't crank? Then the lock is usually fine; a battery or starter is the more likely cause. A flashing security light is different: the car may not be picking up the key's chip, and that's work we do.
Ignition Damaged in a Theft Attempt
A forced or drilled ignition after a theft attempt usually needs a new lock cylinder. We replace the damaged part so the car starts with a key again.
Before We Get There
- Turn the steering wheel gently while you try the key. A locked wheel can stop the key from turning.
- Don't force the key. It can snap.
- Tell us your car's make, model and year.

Good to Know
- Should I spray lubricant into my ignition? We'd hold off. Some sprays collect dirt and make a worn lock worse. Call us first.
- Do I need a new key after an ignition repair? Sometimes. If we replace the ignition lock, we make keys to match it.
- Can a worn key wear out my ignition? Over time, it can. A worn key wears the lock faster, so replacing it early helps.
- Can you fix a push-button ignition? Push-button cars have no key cylinder to wear out. When one won't start, the cause is usually the smart key or its battery, which our Push-to-Start Keys page covers.
- Can I keep driving with a sticky ignition? It's best not to wait. A lock that sticks tends to get worse, and a worn key may break off in it. Call us while the key still turns.
