When Chevrolet Keys Act Up
- Remote buttons quit, but the engine still starts with that key? The remote and the start chip are separate, so we test the remote side and fix only what failed.
- Key broke off in a door lock or the ignition? We extract the snapped piece, then cut a new key from it or from the code.
Chevrolet Keys by Type
- VATS keys: some Chevy cars from the late 1980s to about 2002, like the Camaro, Corvette and Caprice, with a small coded pellet in the blade.
- Passlock keys: many late-1990s and early-2000s models, like the Malibu, Impala, Cavalier and S-10. The key looks ordinary; the security lives in the ignition.
- Chip keys: many Chevy trucks, SUVs and cars from the mid-2000s on, often marked with a small circle-plus on the blade.
- GM flip keys: a regular sight on the Equinox, Cruze and Camaro from about 2010, the Malibu a few years later, and many trucks and SUVs since.
- Keyless Start fobs (push-button start): higher Malibu, Tahoe, Suburban and Traverse trims in the 2010s, with more models and trims added since.
Year and trim both count. On one model year of Silverado, a work-truck trim and a top trim can use different keys. Call (443) 527-1442 with the VIN and we'll look it up.
Check your registration or insurance card for the VIN, or look through the windshield at the lower driver's-side corner.
Chevrolet Key Problems We Fix
Chevy Keyless Start (push-to-start) fobs
- Keyless Start lets a Chevy start by button while the fob stays put in a pocket or purse. New and extra fobs for the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Traverse, Equinox, Malibu and Blazer are a regular job for us.
- When the dash says no remote is detected, the fob battery is often fading; where to set the fob so the car still starts is in the FAQ below.
- There's a mechanical key inside the fob for the driver's door.
- Out of fobs completely? Most Chevrolet models can get a new one programmed at the curb.
Broken Chevy flip key? Blade or housing
- GM flip keys snap at the hinge or lose spring tension. The blade or housing can be swapped while your remote keeps working.
Before We Get There
- Tell us if your Chevy has a start button, a flip key or a plain key.
- Tell us what floor and section of the garage you're on.

Good to Know
- My Silverado key has a small black dot on it. Does that matter? Yes. That pellet tells the truck it's the right key, so the new key needs the matching value.
- Why does my Chevy key have a small circle-plus symbol? On many GM keys, it means a chip is built in. A plain copy without the chip won't start the car.
- What is Passlock on an older Chevy? It's an older GM anti-theft system where the check happens inside the ignition, not in the key. A blinking security light and no start often trace back to the ignition or lock cylinder.
- Where does my Chevy fob go if the car can't find it? Most Keyless Start models have a backup pocket, often in the console or a cup holder. Place the fob in that pocket, then push the start button.
