When GMC Keys Act Up

  • The Sierra won't crank and a lock icon stays lit on the dash.
  • Several drivers sharing one Sierra? We can make an extra key for each of them, all programmed to that same truck.

GMC Keys by Type

  • Chip keys (turn ignition): many Sierra, Yukon, Envoy and Savana trucks built since about 2005; look for GM's circle-plus symbol on the blade.
  • GM flip keys: common on the Terrain and Acadia from about 2010, the Canyon from 2015, and turn-key Sierra and Yukon trucks in the 2010s.
  • Push-button start fobs: most Yukon and Yukon XL models since about 2015, upper Acadia, Terrain and Canyon trims, and Sierra SLT, AT4 and Denali trucks, mostly from 2019 on.

On a GMC, the trim often picks the key. A 2019 Sierra 1500 work truck uses a flip key, but the 2019 Sierra Denali has push-button start. Give us the VIN over the phone at (443) 527-1442, and the exact key gets looked up.

The truck's VIN is on your title and registration, and you can read it on the dash plate from outside, through the glass by the driver's wiper.

GMC Key Problems We Fix

GMC push-button start fobs

  • With a push-start fob, a Sierra or Yukon fires up by button even with the fob tucked in a work bag. We add fobs, or make new ones after a loss, for the Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, Acadia, Terrain and Canyon.
  • Dash says no remote is found? Swap the fob battery first. Most of these trucks also have a fallback spot inside, often a console slot, where a fob that's running low still gets read; your owner's manual says where it is in your truck.
  • A slim mechanical key slides from the fob for use in the driver's door lock.

Broken GMC key? Flip blade, head or chip

  • The hinge pin on a GM flip key wears out, so the blade wobbles or flips shut. Fitting a fresh blade or flip housing fixes it, and the remote board stays.
  • Plastic heads on older Sierra and Yukon chip keys crack and shed the chip. Hold on to the chip so we can check it before cutting.
  • A truck key worn down by years on a heavy key ring gets cut fresh from the code.

Before We Get There

  • Tell us whether it's a pickup, an SUV or a van.
  • If you're moving, tell us the address where the truck is now.
  • Look for a spare in the glove box or the console before we arrive.

Good to Know

  1. Is a GMC key the same as a Chevrolet key? Many use the same GM key styles, but each key is still cut and programmed for your truck.
  2. Can you make a key for a Sierra work truck with a high-security blade? Yes. We cut the blade to your truck's code and program the chip.
  3. Can you program a new fob for my Yukon if I still have one? Yes. Adding a fob when you still have a working one is quicker.
  4. Why is there a circle with a plus sign on my GMC key? That symbol tells you the key has a chip inside. A copy cut without that chip turns the lock but won't start the truck.
  5. Does a GMC Sierra Denali use a different key than a work truck? Often, yes. Denali and other high trims tend to have push-button start, while base trucks use a flip key or chip key. The VIN confirms it.
  6. Can you make a GMC key with no key left at all? Yes, for most GMC models. We cut a blade by the code number and match the key or fob to the truck where it's parked.
