When Buick Keys Act Up
- Key won't budge in the ignition? With the front wheels turned, the steering lock can bind. Wiggle the wheel slightly as the key turns.
- Worried about a fob that went missing? On most models, programming a new key sets up only the keys you still have, so the missing fob won't start the Buick.
Buick Keys by Type
- Passlock keys: lots of LeSabre, Century, Park Avenue and Rendezvous models built around 1997 to 2005, where the anti-theft check sits in the ignition.
- Chip keys: many turn-key Buicks from the mid-2000s on, such as the Lucerne and early Enclave.
- GM flip keys: the LaCrosse and Regal from about 2010, the Verano, the Encore, and the Enclave through 2017.
- Push-button start fobs: the Enclave since its 2018 redesign, the Envision, Encore GX and Envista, and higher LaCrosse and Regal trims.
A redesign can change the key. A 2017 Enclave uses a GM flip key, while the 2018 Enclave starts with a button. With the VIN in front of you, ring (443) 527-1442 and we'll confirm which Buick key fits.
Every Buick lists its VIN on the registration, and on a small plate visible at the lower left of the windshield.
Buick Key Problems We Fix
Buick push-button start fobs
- A push-start fob lets the Buick open and start while it rides in your purse or coat. We program added and replacement fobs for the Enclave, Envision, Encore GX, LaCrosse and Regal.
- A "no remote detected" message usually comes down to a weak fob battery; FAQ 2 below says what to do.
- A removable key inside the fob opens the driver's door.
Broken Buick key? Flip blade, remote start or security lamp
- GM flip keys on Buicks wear at the hinge until the blade sticks halfway. Swapping the blade or the flip housing cures it, and the remote and remote start buttons keep working.
- If only the remote start button quits, the fob may need a new battery or a new case before it needs replacing.
- On older Buicks, a blinking security lamp with a dead start usually means an ignition problem, so we test it before we cut anything.
Before We Get There
- Tell us if your Buick has a flip key or a push-button fob.
- If you have a working Buick key, have it ready. It can make programming simpler.
- If the lot is dark, turn on your phone light so we spot you.

Good to Know
- Is a Buick flip key the same as a Chevy flip key? They look alike, but each key is cut and programmed for your Buick.
- What does "no remote detected" mean on my Buick? The car can't read the fob. A weak battery is often the cause, or the fob needs to be replaced. Most of these Buicks also have a backup spot that can still pick up a weak fob; the owner's manual marks where it is.
- My older Buick has Passlock. What does that mean? It's GM anti-theft built into many Buicks from roughly the late 1990s to the mid-2000s. The key looks plain, and the security check happens in the ignition cylinder instead of a chip.
- Does my new Buick flip key keep the remote start button? Yes, when your Buick came with remote start. We program the new key so lock, unlock, trunk and remote start all work.
- Can a locksmith make a Buick key when every key is lost? Yes, for most Buick models. We make and program the replacement right beside the car, so there's no need for a tow.
