How Smart Keys Work

A smart key talks to the car by radio. When it's close, the doors unlock with a touch and the start button works. Most smart keys also hide a small metal key for the door, in case the battery dies.

Smart key gone from your coat pocket after a class? We come to the studio's lot and program a new one.

When to Call

  • The dash says the key isn't detected, even with a new battery.
  • The car starts only when the key touches the start button.
  • Your only smart key is lost, or you want a second one.

Service Area

Smart keys for drivers in Baltimore City and in Baltimore, Howard, Harford, Anne Arundel and Carroll counties.

Smart Key Got Soaked

A soaked smart key often quits for good. Let it dry out completely first. If it still won't work, we program a replacement to your car.

Dead Smart Key, Locked Car

The blade inside the smart key opens the driver's door (can't find the keyhole? see the FAQ below). Blade missing or stuck? We get you in with no damage to the car and set up a new smart key there.

Before We Get There

  • Tell us if you have any smart key left for this car.
  • Tell us if the car is locked or open.
  • Tell us if you need one key or a spare too.

Good to Know

  1. My smart key battery died. Can I still start the car? On many cars, yes. Hold the key against the start button, or put it in the spot your owner's manual shows.
  2. Is a smart key the same as a key fob? A smart key is one kind of fob. It stays in your pocket or bag, and the car senses it nearby.
  3. Can someone else's smart key start my car? No. Each smart key is programmed to its own car.
  4. My door handle has no keyhole. Where is the lock? On many push-button cars it hides under a small plastic cover on the driver's handle, at its rear tip. Pop the cover off and the keyhole is right there.
  5. Why does my car lose the smart key when it's next to my phone? Phones, chargers and other fobs in the same pocket can get in the way of the key's signal. Move the key away from them, and if the warning comes back often, have the fob battery checked.
