When Genesis Keys Act Up

  • The trunk opens from the fob, but the doors won't unlock.
  • Down to one Genesis smart key? Adding a spare now, while that key still works, is quicker than replacing every key later.

Genesis Keys by Type

  • Hyundai Genesis smart keys: the Hyundai Genesis sedan from about 2009 to 2016, which most often started by button; Genesis Coupe keys depend on the trim.
  • First Genesis-brand smart keys: the G80 and G90 from 2017 and the G70 from 2019.
  • Newer Genesis smart keys: the redesigned G80 from 2021, the GV70, GV80 and GV60, with a different fob from the first models.

A redesign changes the fob. A 2020 G80 and a 2021 G80 look for different smart keys, because the car was all new for 2021. When you call (443) 527-1442, tell us the VIN and we'll bring the fob made for your Genesis.

Read the VIN off the Genesis registration, or find it stamped on a plate peeking out by the left wiper.

Genesis Key Problems We Fix

Genesis smart keys (push-to-start)

  • The smart key opens the Genesis as your hand reaches the door handle, and the start button responds as long as the key is in the car. We add spares and make replacements for the G70, G80, G90, GV70 and GV80.
  • If the Genesis won't detect the key, a worn-out key battery is the usual reason; the FAQ near the bottom of this page has a quick test.

Broken Genesis key? Case, buttons or hidden key

  • Smart key cases scuff and split along the seam, and buttons wear down. A new case can hold a board that still works.
  • When the hidden key won't release, the latch is often bent; we straighten or replace the latch, or cut a fresh key.

Good to Know

  1. Will a Hyundai smart key start my Genesis? No. Genesis comes from Hyundai, but its smart keys are their own and are programmed to your exact car.
  2. Every Genesis smart key is gone. Can you still set one up? Yes, for most models. It takes longer than adding a spare.
  3. Where is the metal key in my Genesis smart key? Most have a small release on the fob that lets the metal key slide out.
  4. The Genesis can't find its key. Is it the battery? Set the smart key flat on the start button and give it a push. If the engine starts, the key needs a new battery; if not, call (443) 527-1442.
