Kia Models We See Most
Optima · K5 · Forte · Sorento · Sportage · Soul · Telluride · Seltos · Rio · Sedona · Carnival · Niro · Stinger · Cadenza
When Kia Keys Act Up
- Bought a used Kia with a single key? We add a second one so you're never down to zero.
- Kia key turning hard in the ignition? Worn cuts on the blade are a common reason, and a key cut fresh from the code often turns smoothly again.
Kia Keys by Type
- Turn keys without a chip: many base Forte, Optima, Soul, Sportage, Rio and Sorento models from around 2011 to 2021.
- Chip keys: most 2000s Kias, and turn-key models built with an immobilizer.
- Flip keys: common on Optima, Forte, Sportage, Soul, Sorento and Rio through the 2010s.
- Smart Key fobs for push-to-start: the Telluride, Stinger and most newer K5, Sorento and Carnival models, plus upper Sportage, Forte, Soul and Niro trims.
Your trim can change the key. On a 2018 Sportage, the LX has a flip key and the SX Turbo has a push-to-start Smart Key. Have your VIN ready and phone (443) 527-1442 so we bring the correct key.
You'll find the VIN on your insurance card, or stamped on a label inside the driver's door opening.
Kia Key Problems We Fix
Kia Smart Key (push-to-start) fobs
- We program extra Smart Keys, or replace lost ones, for the Telluride, Sorento, K5, Sportage, Carnival and Stinger.
- A "key not detected" warning usually points to a low fob battery. Holding the fob right up to the start button and pressing will still start many Kias.
- Each Smart Key hides a mechanical key, handy for the driver's door if the fob dies.
Broken Kia flip key? Blade or pivot
- Kia flip keys often break at the pivot, so the blade hangs loose or won't fold. A new blade or flip head fixes it, and your remote board can stay.
Before We Get There
- Pick up every piece of the fob you can find, including the circuit board.
- Tell us your Kia model and whether it has a start button.
- If you're at a car wash or a store, move off to the side if you can, and tell us where.

Good to Know
- Can you rebuild a Kia fob that fell apart? If the circuit board isn't damaged, a replacement case can bring it back. If it is damaged, we program a new fob.
- Do Kia and Hyundai use the same keys? They share a lot of parts, but your key still has to be made and programmed for your exact car.
- What is a Kia Smart Key? That's Kia's proximity fob. The car senses it nearby; the doors open with a touch, and a button press starts the engine.
- Is there a chip in my Kia key? Not always. Many base Kias with a turn key, built from about 2011 to 2021, came from the factory without a chip immobilizer. Those keys only need cutting. Later models have a chip.
- Can a Kia key be made when I have no key at all? Yes, for most Kia models. We cut the blade by code and set up the new key or Smart Key next to your car.
