Most newer cars have a chip in the key, and the car has to recognize that chip before it starts. How we do it, step by step, is in the FAQ below. We do this for domestic and Asian cars, trucks and SUVs.

Older Car Without a Chip

Many cars built before the late 1990s have no chip in the key. Cut it to match your locks and it's ready, with no programming step.

Key Lost, Car at a Garage or Work Lot

Tell us the garage, the level and the space when you call, and let the attendant know a locksmith is coming. Your new key is made at that spot.

Good to Know

  1. How do you make a key when there's nothing to copy? We cut it to fit your locks, then program it to the car.
  2. What proof does it take before you make a car key? A photo ID and proof that the car is yours. We check both before we start.
  3. Can you make a key for a car that's locked? Yes. We unlock it first, then make and program the new key.
  4. Will the lost key still start my car? On many models, making a new key clears the old ones from the car's memory, so a lost key can't start it. Ask us on the call whether that's true for your car.
  5. Where does the key code come from? For many brands, the code is looked up from the VIN after we check your paperwork. For others, we read it from one of the car's locks.
