When Honda Keys Act Up

  • Lost every Honda key? No spare needed. We cut the blade from your Honda's key code and pair the new key at the car.
  • Honda key won't turn? It can be a worn key or a worn ignition. We check which before we make anything.

Honda Keys by Type

  • Plain chip keys (black head, no buttons): mostly early-2000s Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot and Element.
  • Remote head keys (blade and buttons in one piece): most Civic, Accord, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot and Fit from about 2008 into the mid-2010s.
  • Flip keys: base trims of the 2016–2021 Civic and the 2017–2022 CR-V, plus base-trim HR-Vs.
  • Smart Entry fobs (push-button start): upper trims since the mid-2010s, and most Accords since 2018.

Two Hondas from the same year can need different keys. A 2016 Civic LX has a flip key, but a 2016 Civic EX-T has a start button. Call (443) 527-1442 with your VIN and we'll tell you which one fits.

Honda Key Problems We Fix

Honda Smart Entry (push-to-start) fobs

  • We set up new and spare Smart Entry fobs for the Civic, Accord, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, HR-V and Ridgeline.
  • A "Key Not Detected" message usually means a weak fob battery. See the FAQ below for the quick fix.
  • Tucked inside each Smart Entry fob is a slim metal key for the driver's door lock.

Broken Honda key? Shell, blade or buttons

  • Honda remote head keys tend to crack where the blade enters the plastic. Your working remote board and chip can go into a fresh shell.
  • Flip key hinges loosen with use until the blade flops. Swapping in a new flip housing solves that.
  • A blade worn smooth enough to slip in the door or ignition can be recut to factory depth from your Honda's key code.

Good to Know

  1. Can you reuse the chip from my broken Honda key? Sometimes. If the chip is fine, we may move it into a new housing. If not, we program a new key.
  2. My Civic key turns but won't start the car. Is it the key? It can be the chip, the key or the ignition. We test all three before we make anything.
  3. Can you replace the emergency blade inside my Honda smart fob? Yes. We can cut a new blade for the fob from your car's code.
  4. What is Honda Smart Entry? That's Honda's term for its push-button start fob. Sensors pick up the fob nearby, so the doors unlock and the engine starts without it leaving your pocket.
  5. There's no spare Honda key at all. Is a new one possible? Yes, for most Honda models. We cut the blade from the key code and pair the new key to your Honda at your location.
  6. My Honda says "Key Not Detected." What do I do? Press the Engine Start/Stop button with the H logo side of the fob. If the engine starts, the fob battery is low. If nothing happens, call (443) 527-1442.
