When Toyota Keys Act Up

  • Key light on and no start? The key turns, yet the car doesn't read its chip. We test the chip before we cut or code anything.
  • Key stuck in the ignition? Make sure the shifter sits fully in Park. If it still won't come out, call us before you force it.

Toyota Keys by Type

  • Chip keys without buttons: older Camry, Corolla, Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner through the 2000s, and some base models after that.
  • Keys with lock buttons on the head: plenty of Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander and Sienna from around 2010 to the late 2010s, mostly lower trims.
  • Smart Key fobs (push-button start): most Prius models, upper Camry, RAV4, Highlander and Avalon trims during the 2010s, and more trims every year since.

Chip letter: many Toyota blades from about 2010 on carry a small G or H stamp near the head. It tells us which chip to use.

Year and trim decide the key. Take a 2016 RAV4: the LE uses a key with buttons on the head, and the Limited starts by button with a Smart Key. Give us your VIN at (443) 527-1442 and we'll match it.

The VIN is printed on your insurance card and registration, and on a plate you can read through the windshield by the driver's seat.

Toyota Smart Key System (push-to-start)

  • Spare and replacement Smart Keys for the Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Prius and others are part of our daily work.
  • Car only starts with the fob pressed to the start button? That's usually a low fob battery, and the FAQ below explains the workaround.
  • Pull the release on the fob and a mechanical key comes out for the driver's door.

Broken Toyota key? Head, chip or buttons

  • Older Toyota chip keys split at the plastic head, and the chip can drop out. Save every piece so we can test the chip first.
  • Keys with lock buttons on the head often lose a button or crack open after a fall. The good parts can move into a new case, or we cut and code a new key.

Before We Get There

  • Tell us the model and year. For a smart fob, tell us if the car has a start button.
  • Tell us which Toyota you drive and the year.
  • If you still have one working Toyota key, keep it with you. It can make the new key quicker.

Good to Know

  1. Why does my Toyota start only when the fob touches the start button? Usually the fob battery is getting weak. Hold the fob, emblem side first, close against the start button; the car can still read it from there and start. Put in a fresh battery; if that doesn't fix it, we test the fob and set up a new one when needed.
  2. Can you add a second fob to my Highlander so we each have one? Yes. We program the extra fob while you wait.
  3. My Toyota key has a G or H near the head. Why? That letter identifies the chip generation. We code the same kind so your Toyota accepts the new key.
  4. What is the Toyota Smart Key System? It's Toyota's push-button start setup. The car knows the fob is close, so you can open it and start it without pulling the key out.
  5. Can a locksmith make a Toyota key with no working key left? Yes, on most Toyota models. It's a longer job than making a spare, and the whole job happens next to your car. That includes a lost Smart Key fob.
