When Lexus Keys Act Up

  • Down to your last Smart Access key? Adding a spare while one key still works is a simpler job than starting from zero.
  • Older ES or LS key refusing to turn? The blade or the ignition can be the worn part, and we find out which one first.

Lexus Keys by Type

  • Chip keys: older ES, LS, GS, RX and LX models, built roughly 1998 to 2003.
  • Remote head keys: some 2000s ES, IS, RX and GX models that came without Smart Access.
  • Smart Access keys (push-button start): most Lexus models built since about 2007, and close to every Lexus from the last decade.

Options can change the key, too. A mid-2000s RX might have a one-piece remote key or a Smart Access key, depending on how it was equipped. Ring (443) 527-1442 and read us your VIN so we bring the right one.

Lexus Smart Access (push-to-start) keys

  • We program spare and replacement Smart Access keys for the RX, ES, NX, IS, GX and UX.
  • Dash reading "Key not detected"? A tired key battery is the usual cause, and the FAQ below has the power-button trick.

Broken Lexus key? Shell, chip or buttons

  • Smart Access key cases wear thin at the seams. We can move your working board into a new case, or program a new key.
  • Older Lexus chip keys crack at the head, and the chip may fall out. Keep every piece so the chip can be tested.
  • A remote head key with dead buttons may only need a battery or a new button pad; we check before replacing it.

Good to Know

  1. How do I open my Lexus if the smart key is dead? Slide out the metal key hidden in the fob and use it in the driver's door.
  2. Can you make a Lexus key if I lost the only one? Yes, for most models. We program a new smart key to the car.
  3. Does a new Lexus key come with the hidden metal key? Yes. We cut the metal key inside the fob to match your car.
  4. How does Lexus Smart Access work? Lexus uses the name for keyless entry plus a power button for starting. The car reads the key nearby, so touching the handle unlocks the doors and the power button starts the engine.
  5. My Lexus won't see the key. How do I start it? On most models, hold the Lexus emblem side of the key against the power button and press. If that works, the key just needs a new battery.
  6. Is a Lexus key the same as a Toyota key? They often use similar parts, but Lexus keys have their own shells and are still programmed to your exact car.
