When Infiniti Keys Act Up

  • Intelligent Key soaked in rain or the washer? Take the battery out and let the key dry fully first. If it stays dead once it's dry, we program a new one.
  • Older I35 or QX4 key hard to turn? Years of use wear down its cuts, so we cut a fresh key from the original code and test it in the ignition.

Infiniti Keys by Type

  • Chip keys: the I30, I35, QX4 and other Infinitis built before about 2003, plus some base trims later on.
  • Intelligent Keys (start by button or knob): the bulk of Infinitis built after the mid-2000s; some early ones turn a knob on the dash instead of pressing a button.
  • Newer Intelligent Keys: the Q50, Q60, QX50, QX55, QX60 and QX80, all with push-button start.

On some early models the options decide the key. A 2005 G35 sedan came with either a plain chip key or an Intelligent Key, based on its option package. Call (443) 527-1442 and have your VIN ready so we program the correct Infiniti key.

Your Infiniti's VIN is listed on the registration, and you'll also find it printed on the label in the driver's door opening.

Infiniti Key Problems We Fix

Infiniti Intelligent Key (push-to-start)

  • Spare Intelligent Keys and replacements are programmed for the Q50, QX50, QX60 and QX80, the G and M sedans, and the FX and QX56.
  • When the Infiniti can't find its key, suspect the key battery first. Our FAQ further down shows the start-button fix.

Broken Infiniti key? Case, hidden key or chip head

  • Intelligent Key shells wear through at the edges and the buttons go soft. If the board still works, it moves into a new case.
  • The small release that frees the hidden key can stick or snap; we fix the case or cut a new blade.
  • Older chip keys crack around the head. Keep the chip, and we'll test it before cutting a copy.

Before We Get There

  • Look at the sticker inside the driver's door for the year.
  • Empty your bag and pockets once more. Lost keys turn up in odd places.
  • Share the address so we can pull up beside your Infiniti.

Good to Know

  1. Can a Nissan key work in my Infiniti? Not as is. Even when they look alike, the key has to be programmed for your Infiniti.
  2. My Infiniti fob is missing its metal key. Can you replace it? Yes. We cut a new metal key to fit your Infiniti's locks.
  3. Can you add a second Intelligent Key to my Infiniti? Yes. We program a spare so each driver has one.
  4. What is the Infiniti Intelligent Key? It's the smart key Infiniti uses. The car senses it nearby, so a press of the door button unlocks it and the engine fires up with the key never leaving your bag.
  5. How do I start my Infiniti if the key battery is dead? On many push-start models, touch the Intelligent Key to the start button, then push the button. If the car still won't start, call (443) 527-1442.
  6. Can you replace an Infiniti key when I have none left? Yes, on most models. The new Intelligent Key gets paired with your Infiniti wherever it sits.
