Transponder Key Programming Around Baltimore

AUTHORITY LOCKSMITH INC · TRANSPONDER KEY PROGRAMMING

A chip key has to be introduced to your car's computer before the engine will run with it. We bring the programmer to wherever the car sits, day or night. Call (443) 527-1442.

What the Chip in Your Key Does

Inside the plastic head of most car keys from about the late 1990s on is a small transponder chip. When you turn the key, the car's immobilizer reads that chip's code. If the code isn't one the car has learned, the engine won't start, or it starts and shuts off a second later, depending on the car. Programming adds your new key's code to the car so it's accepted.

A plain metal copy of your Civic key unlocks the car, yet the engine stays dead? We cut a chip key and pair it right in your driveway.

When You Need a Chip Key Programmed

  • The engine won't run even though the key turns, and a security or key light on the dash flashes or stays lit.
  • Your used car had just one key when you bought it, and you want a spare before that one goes missing.
  • The key head split and the chip is loose or gone.

Service Area

Driveways, office lots and garages are where we program most chip keys. We cover Baltimore City and five nearby counties: Baltimore, Howard, Harford, Anne Arundel and Carroll.

Chip Key Jobs We Do

Spare chip keys while you still have one that works · New chip keys when every key is lost · Remote head keys with the chip inside · Chip keys for older pickups and vans.

Before We Get There

  • Count the keys you want working when we're done, the old ones included.
  • Find your VIN on the registration or insurance card.
  • If the key head is cracked, bring the chip along even if it fell out.

Good to Know

  1. What is a transponder key? It's a car key with a small chip in the head that sends a code to the car's immobilizer. No matching code, no start. Ford calls its system PATS and Nissan calls its NATS, but the idea is the same.
  2. Will a key copied without programming start my car? It can open the doors and turn in the ignition, but the engine won't run until the chip is paired with the car. A key with no chip at all can't be paired.
  3. Does the car need to be there? Yes. Most chip keys are programmed through the diagnostic port under the dashboard, so we work at the car itself, wherever it's parked.
  4. No keys left at all. Can a chip key still be programmed? Yes, on most cars. The blade gets cut from the car's key code, and the new chip is paired right there, so the car never has to be towed to a dealer.
  5. Will a new key stop my old keys from working? On some cars, adding a key clears the ones already stored, so every key has to be redone in one visit. Bring all the keys you want to keep using.
