When Mazda Keys Act Up

  • New driver in the family needs a Mazda key? We code one more key to the car, and the keys you already have keep working.
  • Smart key went through the wash? Pull the battery and let it dry out completely before you try it. Still dead after that? We program a replacement.

Mazda Keys by Type

  • Chip keys: the Protege, Tribute, MPV and early Mazda3 and Mazda6 models, mostly from the early-to-mid 2000s.
  • Flip keys: turn-key Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, CX-7 and CX-9 models from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
  • Advanced Keyless Entry smart keys (start by button): higher trims since the late 2000s, and nearly every newer Mazda, including the CX-30, CX-50 and CX-90.

The key can change by trim. A 2015 CX-5 Sport turns a flip key, while a 2015 CX-5 Grand Touring starts with a button. Have the VIN handy when you phone (443) 527-1442; we'll name the right key before we drive out.

Mazda Key Problems We Fix

Mazda Advanced Keyless (push-to-start) keys

  • Spare and replacement smart keys get coded here for the Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, CX-30, CX-50 and CX-9.
  • A key warning light with no start most often means a low smart key battery. You can still start the car that way; the FAQ below explains how.
  • Inside the smart key sits a small auxiliary key that opens the driver's door.

Broken Mazda key? Flip blade, case or buttons

  • Mazda flip keys often lose their spring, so the blade folds back as you turn it. A new blade or flip case usually fixes it with your remote kept.
  • Remote buttons that stop working one by one can be a worn button pad or a cracked board. We test it, then repair the case or make a new key.
  • On older chip keys, a worn blade is cut new from your Mazda's key code.

  1. Can you make a Mazda smart key when the car is locked? Yes. We get into the car first, then program the new key.
  2. Can you program a used Mazda key I bought online? Some can be reused and some can't. Tell us the model and we'll let you know before we come out.
  3. How does Advanced Keyless Entry work on a Mazda? It's the smart key setup Mazda uses. The car senses the key nearby, so pressing the small button on the door opens it, and the start button runs the engine.
  4. My Mazda smart key battery died. How do I start the car? On many models, hold the back of the smart key to the start button while pushing it. No luck? Then it's time to call (443) 527-1442.
  5. Is a Mazda key possible with no spare to copy? Yes, on most Mazda models. We cut the auxiliary blade by code and pair the replacement with your car wherever it is.
