Subaru Models We See Most

Outback · Forester · Crosstrek · Impreza · Legacy · Ascent · WRX · BRZ · Tribeca · Baja

When Subaru Keys Act Up

  • Security light flashing and no start? Usually the car isn't reading the key's chip, so we test the chip first.
  • Key won't come out? Make sure the shift lever is all the way in P. If it still holds, call us rather than pulling hard.

Subaru Keys by Type

  • Chip keys: most Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy and Baja models built from around 2005 until the early 2010s.
  • Remote head keys: turn-key Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy and Crosstrek models from about 2012 to the late 2010s.
  • Keyless Access push-start fobs: upper Outback, Forester, Legacy and Crosstrek trims since the mid-2010s, the Ascent, and most newer Outback and Legacy models.

Trim can matter more than year. A 2017 Forester 2.5i takes a remote head key, but a 2017 Forester Touring has Keyless Access with push-to-start. Phone (443) 527-1442, share the VIN, and we'll say which key is right.

Every Subaru shows its VIN on the registration card and through the low corner of the windshield, driver's side.

Subaru Key Problems We Fix

Subaru Keyless Access (push-to-start) fobs

  • We program spares and replacements for the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Legacy and Ascent.
  • If your Subaru doesn't sense the fob, try a fresh battery first. Many Subarus will also run when the fob is held up to the start button as you press it; the owner's manual has the details for your model.
  • Inside the fob is a mechanical key that unlocks the driver's door.

Broken Subaru key? Remote head, blade or fob

  • Subaru remote head keys wear out their rubber button pad, and the head can crack. We put the parts in a new head or make a new programmed key.
  • Fobs that get soaked on a hike or at the beach often quit. Dry it fully first; if it's still dead, we set up a new one.
  • A blade bent or worn from years of use gets cut again from your Subaru's key code.

Before We Get There

  • Tell us if your Subaru has a start button or a regular ignition.
  • If there's a pet in the car, tell us so we can plan for it.
  • Tell us if the key is lost or only acting up.

Good to Know

  1. My Subaru remote works only up close. Do I need a new key? Try a new battery first. If that doesn't help, we can program a new remote key.
  2. Can you make a valet or spare Subaru key? Yes. A spare made while you wait saves you a bigger hassle later.
  3. What is Subaru Keyless Access? It's Subaru's push-button start and keyless entry system. The car detects the fob nearby, so a touch on the door handle unlocks it and the button starts the engine.
  4. My Subaru has a PIN code for the doors. Do I still need a key? Yes. On models with PIN code access, the code only unlocks the doors or rear gate. Starting the engine still takes a fob programmed to the car.
  5. Is a new Subaru key possible when no spare is left? Yes, for most Subaru models. We cut the key from the code and program it, or program a new Keyless Access fob, wherever the car sits.
