When Hyundai Keys Act Up

  • Trunk button works, but lock and unlock don't? The remote itself is wearing out, and we can swap in a new remote key coded to your Hyundai.
  • Ignition getting stiff on an older Accent or Elantra? A worn key often stops turning before the ignition fails, so we check the key against its code first.

Hyundai Keys by Type

  • Turn keys with no chip: a lot of base Elantra, Accent, Sonata, Tucson and Santa Fe models made roughly 2011 through 2021.
  • Chip keys: many 2000s Hyundais and the turn-key models that came with an immobilizer.
  • Flip keys: the usual key on lower-trim Accent, Elantra, Kona, Sonata, Santa Fe and Tucson models, from about 2008 into the late 2010s.
  • Smart Key fobs with a start button: higher Sonata, Elantra, Tucson and Santa Fe trims since the early 2010s, the Palisade, and a growing share of newer Hyundais.

One model year, two different keys. A 2017 Elantra SE uses a flip key, while a 2017 Elantra Limited has a Smart Key and push-to-start. Our number is (443) 527-1442. Keep the VIN close by so we can confirm yours.

Hyundai Key Problems We Fix

Hyundai Smart Key (push-to-start) fobs

  • We add spare Smart Keys and replace lost ones for the Sonata, Elantra, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade and Kona.
  • If the cluster says the key isn't found, the fob battery is the first suspect. On many Hyundais, touching the fob itself to the start button still gets the engine going.
  • A small emergency blade slides out of the fob to open the driver's door.

Broken Hyundai key? Flip blade, case or buttons

  • The fold-out blade on a Hyundai flip key can snap or stop locking open. A replacement blade or housing goes on, and your remote keeps working.
  • Cracked flip key cases let the circuit board and battery fall out. Bring all the pieces, because the board can often be reused.
  • For chipless turn keys, a worn blade is simply cut fresh from the key code.

Good to Know

  1. Does my Hyundai key have a chip? Most do. Some base models don't. We check yours before we cut a new one.
  2. Can you make a Hyundai key for a student's car on a college campus? Yes. We come to campus garages and lots as long as we can reach the car.
  3. What is a Hyundai Smart Key? It's Hyundai's proximity fob for push-button start. As long as it's inside the car, the button starts the engine, and the door handles unlock when you come near.
  4. Can a locksmith program a Hyundai Smart Key, or is that a dealer job? On most Hyundai models we program it ourselves, at your car, using your VIN to match the right fob.
  5. I lost the only key to my Hyundai. What now? Call (443) 527-1442. In most cases we cut a new blade from the code and pair a new key or Smart Key to the car where it's parked.
